Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Warriors Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in influence within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Fighters, Planners, and Questers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his debts and fled to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the companion and trusted friend, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows Timmony and advises that it is a nasty location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate the target and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as important members in House Halovar could enable the group access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This means them few options but to travel to Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Questers and Planners parties.

Fans can expect discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on next week.
